    CRISIS

RATIONALE

The economic crisis that has started in 2008 has a major impact in the countries of Southern Europe, especially Greece, Spain, Italy and Portugal, which have experienced a significant increase in unemployment and poverty, an attack against the labour movement, an increasing flexibility and insecurity in the labour market and reduction of salaries and benefits.
In this context, the trade unions have a double and contradictory role. On the one hand, they should protect and promote economic and professional interests of their members and on the other hand they have to play an active role in the collective efforts for restarting the economy, development, sustainability of the current jobs and creation of new jobs.
